What Pixar’s Upcoming Musical Coco Will Be About

Watch HD Films

The world is always a better place when there's a Pixar movie on the horizon. Especially when it's an original Pixar movie. We're now less than a year away from Pixar's next original offering, which comes in the shape of Coco. To celebrate this countdown, the studio have given us the most in depth rundown of what we can expect from the film. And, as you probably predicted, it sounds amazing.

The studio provided the additional details regarding to Coco to Entertainment Weekly, explaining that it will revolve around the secret musical ambitions of 12-year-old Miguel Rivera (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez), who lives in a loud and lively Mexican village.

Miguel has to suppress his love of music, though, because his family are actually the only household in their village that despise music. That's because they believe that they've been cursed by it. Instead, they're shoemakers, and are very proud of it. The alleged curse that has hung over the Rivera family stretches back to his great-great-grandfather, who abandoned his wife decades earlier so that he could go off and perform.

This meant that Miguel's great-great-grandmother Imelda was forced to take control as the matriarch of the Rivera clan, and her first act was to declare that music was completely dead to every single member of the family forever. Miguel won't be held back though, and his secret desire burns even stronger after he discovers a link between himself and the late Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt). This provokes Miguel to try and emulate the legendary singer, and in turn he accidentally enters the beautiful underworld known as the Land Of The Dead.

Soon Miguel discovers the souls of generation after generation of his family; and while they're long dead, they're still bubbly and vivacious. Down in the the Land Of The Dead, Miguel decides to search for Ernesto de la Cruz alongside his new pal, a trickster named Hector (Gael Garcia Bernal), while he also has to earn his family's blessing to perform music in public. All of which he must achieve before his chance to return to the Land Of The Living runs out.

Well, I'm sold. To be honest, though, I am immediately intrigued by any original offering that Pixar has to offer. And with good reason, too, because they're the studio behind the likes of Inside Out, Brave, Up, Wall-E, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, and the list goes on and on. In recent years they've focused on making sequels, though, which is why Coco will be preceded by Cars 3 in June 2017 and followed by The Incredibles 2 in 2018 and Toy Story 4 in 2019.

We'll have to savor Coco too, because Pixar have already confirmed that their subsequent original films won't be with us until 2020, when they'll compensate by releasing two in quick succession. Thankfully Coco sounds like it's going to be a vast, vivid, and wonderfully unique world of its own, and with Toy Story 3, Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo director Lee Unkrich helming there's plenty of reasons to be excited about it.

One Guardians Of The Galaxy Mystery Has Just Been Cleared Up, Thanks To James Gunn

uperhero movies are a very particular genre of film. Because of the special place comic characters and settings have in fans' hearts, there are a ton of expectations going into each blockbuster. Everything from the costumes, dialogue, and props are picked apart, and judged on their authenticity to the source material. And because they're viewed with such a watchful eye, any continuity errors or goofs are usually noticed, and then promptly discussed on social media. Case in point: Guardians of the Galaxy. In particular, Star-Lord's tape player inside The Milano.

Guardians of the Galaxy begins by telling the story of Peter Quill/ Star-Lord's abduction as a child. All that keeps Peter tethered to his lost human life is his awesome mix tape. But how exactly did he get a large tape player in space? He only had his portable one when he was abducted. Luckily for us, the always responsive James Gunn has cleared up any confusion on his Twitter.

Oh. He made it, largely with parts from junkers. You wonder about this and not about flying a ship that travels between planets in hours??? https://twitter.com/CatInARatRace/status/806186435342700544 …

And that, ladies and gents, is why James Gunn is such a treasure. He's happy to answer any minor question about his work, but he's also going to do make fun of you a bit in process.

With TV and audiences now becoming cued into the process of filmmaking, they're cognizant of any mistakes that might occur. While just a few years ago, movies could get away with a plot hole or continuity error, the internet has changed things. People are eager to point out the missteps in movies, leading to questions about the origin of Star-Lord's Milano tape player. Alas, James Gunn had a perfectly plausible answer. And it's not like James Gunn and his co-writer were about to insert an expositional line about a damn tape player in Guardians. That would have been ridiculous.

It should be interesting to see what Star-Lord's second mixtape is like for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Awesome Mix Vol. 1 was one of the more iconic aspects of the first film. But a new movie needs a new soundtrack, and we can only hope that the second mixtape is as hilarious as the first. The juxtaposition between intergalactic superheroics and 70's jams was hilariously bizarre, and it's something that will be needed when the sequel hits theaters.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will fly into theaters May 5th, 2017.
